一个人在荒野中，同伴的抛弃，恶劣的自然环境，以及那匹随时都会将自己吞噬的病狼……一切的一切，在他那顽强的求生欲面前又是多么的微不足道？一个人挣扎着，抱着对生的希望。他是恐惧死亡的吧，也许。最近的'这几年，随着成长的脚步，不断的听说有人因为各种各样的原因而轻生，确实，我不理解他们是受到了怎么样的打击或是困扰，能够让他们选择死亡，选择这个放弃一切，选择这个最不负责任也是最怯懦和逃避的方式。

杰克·伦敦在其短篇小说《热爱生命》中描写了一位无名的淘金人在归途中遭伙伴抛弃、在自然困境中、濒临死亡下向我们展示的顽强的生存意志——惊人的生命力和挑战极限的斗志。
淘金人带着沉甸甸的金子凯旋而归，美好的未来似乎已经展现在淘金人的眼前。可是，他陷入了生命的困境——孤独一人在荒野中行走，身体病弱，行走艰难，缺衣少食，面对饥饿难耐的野兽，他该如何走出困境？
信仰是心灵最好的朋友。他显然被比尔抛弃了，可是他没有放弃对朋友的信任，他相信，比尔会在前面等他，他们会合后，可以结伴南行，远离寒冷的北方。这种信仰，支持着他迈着疲惫的步伐继续前行。这对他而言，是生的希望。
饥饿是身体最大的'敌人。在体力透支的情况下，他努力吞咽着又苦又辣的浆果、灯芯草根、生鱼、活的小松鸡、野兽吃剩的碎骨头，只要是能补充体力的东西，他都吃，因为，保存体力才能生存下去，这是再简单不过的道理。
当金子成为负担时，舍弃是一种智慧。金子曾经是淘金人绚丽的梦想，然而，此时却成为疲惫不堪的淘金人的负担。继续背负金子前行，只能走向死亡。舍弃它，才能走得更远。比尔至死没有扔掉淘来的金子，所以等待他的是死亡。而淘金人睿智地分批扔掉了金子，也就扔掉了负担，轻装前行，走向生命。
野兽是巨大的、可怕的。大棕熊在淘金人昂扬的生命的咆哮中退却了，饥饿的大灰狼在他可怕的耐心中倒下了，并为他注入了活的血液。
他活下来了。到底是什么让他活下来了？是对生的渴望，对生命的不放弃和热爱，使他最终走出了生命的困境，焕发生命！
